A slight phobia
When I was doing dishes last night, I realized I have a phobia that I don’t think is rational. We have a garbage disposal. I didn’t grow up with one of those. Maybe if I had grown up with one of these I would not have this fear, but I do…
My fear/phobia is that while my hand is submerged in it trying to find what food item has blocked the blades, the power is going to fluctuate in the house and cause it to go on while my hand is in there. Is this normal? To obsess like that?
Also in other news, I cut my finger WIDE OPEN (and I mean DEEP) on the saran wrap box last night. My hands had been all soft and supple like Dawn™ promises and reached in there and “slice”! Mike was perplexed at my howling and many papers towels later at how I did such a thing. I am a serious accident waiting to happen. No, really I am. You should see the bruise on my arm. And my torn ACL. I am just officially THAT clutzy.
I hope my clutzyness doesn’t accidentally turn on the garbage disposal while my hand is in it.

I too am afraid of garbage disposals turning on, and I DID grow up with one and DON’T have one now (although I really wish I did). When reaching into one, now & as a kid, I would first check the switch to make sure it’s really off. So I would have to turn it on first to check that it actually works and then off—because if it comes on and then off it’s not like it’s broken and in the on position and would therefore suddenly start working at any given moment. And rooting around in there? Done quickly and while holding my breath. And yet I miss those devices of evil so… Dumping out the gunk into the trash just doesn’t get things quite clean enough. My dream, in fact, is to get a GD someday so my neurotic behaviors towards them can re-surface.
I cannot believe you and I share this same fear.
Like to the exact description.
I say a little prayer before I stick my hand down there.

Commenting is not available in this section entry.I too have the same exact same fear!!! and as you know I did not grow up with one either. but when I do stick my hand in there I think it is going to get hungry and automatically turn on!!!! I’m pretty sure the owner manuals say NOT to stick your hand in it at anytime, but obviously the writers didn’t spend much time with the garbage disposal. I love it though!!! Hey!!...why are WE sticking our hands in these things? Where are our partners when we need them?
